How to make your own dog snacks

  • NUTRITION

o you like to treat your dog, but are concerned about the ingredients that go into them and want to have a closer look at just what your pooch is eating? If you're a dab hand in the kitchen, making snacks for your pet can be great fun and your dog will love you for it (we're pretty sure, that is).

To get you rolling, here's a recipe for Romney's Chicken and Sweet Potato Bites.

Ingredients:

2 Apples

1 Sweet Potato

1/2 Butternut Squash or Pumpkin

2 Chicken Breasts

1 cup of Rice Flour

3 Eggs

  1. Apple sauce: take both apples and peel, then remove their cores. Slice the apples into smaller chunks and put them in a pan. Pour a tablespoon of water on top and cook for 5-10 minutes over 180°C  till the apples are soft. Mash for a smooth texture.

2. Sweet potato and butternut squash: Pierce the skin of the sweet potato and cut the squash in half and cook for 45 minutes in 200°C, but make sure to check the centres are soft before you take them out the oven.
If you are using a microwave, cook separately on high heat for 8-10 minutes.

3. Chicken: take the breasts and cut up into small pieces and put in a frying pan with a dash of vegetable oil. Cook the chicken until it is golden brown which should take about 5 minutes. You can also use left over chicken.

4. Combine the sweet potato, butternut squash and 2 tablespoons of apple sauce. Then add the chicken pieces, eggs and flour until you get a thicker texture. Place the mixture in a lined tin and cook in the oven for 15 minutes at 180°C. Finally, cut out your biscuits.
