Cavaliers do have a propensity as a breed to carry some of the more serious genetic illnesses, such as Syringomyelia and Mitral Valve Disease.
Syringomyelia (SM)
This is a genetic condition commonly found in Cavaliers where the skull’s formation isn’t large enough for the brain giving rise to problems with the brain and spine. One of the early signs is sensitivity around the neck area teamed with “air scratching”. Treatment is limited for SM, but corticosteroids can relieve symptoms (although can sometimes cause serious side effects).
Average vet fees: £400 - 12000+
Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)
A heart murmur that can lead to heart failure, this condition is fairly common in Cavalier King Charles spaniels. A lot is still unknown about the causes, but the disease can be managed by medication and surgery usually entails the mitral valve replacement.
Average vet fees: £400 - 12000+
Episodic Falling (EF)
This is a neurological condition, caused by a single recessive gene, that affects the muscles. It creates increased muscle toning meaning the dog cannot relax and often falls or seizes over for several minutes (or even hours, in extreme cases). Treatment for this non-progressive disorder improves with therapy and medication.
