In both the smooth hair and rough hair version the Jack Russell is highly affectionate, yet this masks a fierce independence and a tough character. They are pretty portable, just don’t call them lap-dogs.

Predominantly a healthy breed, some of the more common conditions associated with Jack Russells are Legg Perthes disease, eye and deafness (mostly in old age) diseases. Some are prone to patellar luxations (knee dislocation).

Jack Russells need to be socialised from an early age with other dogs and do best living indoors. They are recreational barkers, so perhaps spare a thought for your neighbours.
